NCC Governing Board Meets in New Orleans: Engages in Prayer and Action

NCC Governing Board members participated in a silent prayer walk to the New Orleans Convention Center where much suffering took place, where we engaged in prayer.

The Special Commission on the Just Rebuilding of the Gulf Coast made a great presentation about the compexities of the issues. Dr. C.T. Vivian (celebrated civil rights leader) brought several pastors with him and shared with us his program for connecting 10 churches outside New Orleans with 1 New Orleans Church. Then leaders and Organizers of PICO Louisiana (PICO is a community organizing network) shared with us the struggles on the ground. They shared with us a video of a clergy visit and community meeting. You can view it here: http://www.picolouisiana.org/clergy-summit-video-1.html

Great to see this here. I've spoken with pastors and grantmakers of faith-based community organizing who participated in the PICO Network clergy meeting, and each has told me of their grief at the destruction of homes and communities. Faith-based community organizing networks PICO and the Industrial Areas Foundation, along with ACORN, are working locally and nationally for justice in the rebuilding of the city. People of faith can support this work in our prayers, and our work as clean-up volunteers and most importantly, to keep the issue in the awareness of the public and elected officials.
